I Lay Me Down

“Thus in Judah it was said,
‘The strength of the burden bearers is failing,
Yet there is much rubbish;
And we ourselves are unable to rebuild the wall.’”
–Neh. 4:10

We all start off burden bearers, holding onto the things that give us false pride and not letting go. But when our own strength begins to fail, that is the point of our greatest potential. It is when our weakness catches God’s eye as He looks to and fro across the earth for a humble one, one He can use and take pleasure in as he submits to Him in full surrender, leaning on and trusting Him as a child who has nothing else. It is when our strength fails that God steps in and uses our weakness to show everyone how great He is. He can’t be pleased with someone who insists he’s great without His help.

We can never rebuild our own walls; we only have enough of our own strength to hold ourselves up to a point. God is the builder and the re-builder. At that point where our strength to stand wanes, there appears much rubbish as we fall down and lay our false crowns down to shatter. This rubbish is beautiful. Laying on the ground from torn down walls that didn’t have enough strength to hold themselves up any longer, this rubbish and even their ashes will glisten into beauty. They are the dust of the pretentious things we use to be able to point a prideful rubber sword at the world to say we are worth something. Jesus has given us a real sword, glistening and sharp that clangs with weight and might. He’s waiting to hand it to us once we put down our silly rubber ones..
